rental agreement

Rental agreement.

This agreement applies every time you rent an umalu umbrella. It is part of the terms and conditions between you and the company that operates the UMALU service. You accept it when you confirm a rental in the app.

last updated October 20, 2026

1. Who can rent

You must be 18 or older, have an umalu account and a valid payment method. You are responsible for anyone who uses the umbrella during your rental.

2. Starting and ending a rental

  • A rental starts when you confirm it in the app and the lock opens.
  • It ends when the umbrella is closed, locked, and you confirm the end of the rental in the app.
  • Charges keep running until the rental is ended. If you can't end it, lock the umbrella, take a screenshot and contact support@umalu.app right away.

3. Charges

You pay the rate shown in the app before the rental starts, plus applicable taxes. Receipts appear in the app. If you think a charge is wrong, write to us within 30 days of the rental.

We may also charge, after telling you the amount and the reason:

  • the reasonable cost of repairing an umbrella damaged by misuse;
  • the reasonable cost of replacing an umbrella that is lost or not returned to the lock;
  • the time an umbrella stays rented because a rental was not ended properly.

4. Using the umbrella

  • Use it only on the beach where you rented it. Don't take it off the beach.
  • Set it up as shown in the app and keep it attended while it's open.
  • Close it in strong wind and don't use it during a thunderstorm.
  • Don't tamper with the lock, solar panel or QR code, and don't remove stickers or branding.
  • Don't sublet or resell the rental.
  • Follow lifeguard instructions, posted beach rules and local regulations.

5. Damage, loss and theft

Check the umbrella before you open it. If it's damaged, don't use it and tell us. Report any damage, loss or theft during your rental as soon as possible. Normal wear and tear is on us.

6. Safety

An open umbrella can be moved by wind and can hurt people. Use common sense, keep it secured, and close it if conditions change. Shade reduces sun exposure but is not sunscreen. To the extent permitted by law, you use the umbrella at your own risk.

7. Your belongings

We are not responsible for personal items left under or near an umbrella.

8. Suspension

We may end a rental or suspend an account in case of misuse, unsafe use, unpaid charges, or when an umbrella has to be closed for weather or safety reasons. If we end a rental for weather or safety, you pay only for the time used.
